Background (0rganizational)
KAALO Relief & Development, established in 1991 just after the collapse of Somali central government in that year; is one of the most successful and consistent community based, non-profit, humanitarian and development NGOs in Somalia. KAALO operates in North-Eastern Somalia regions (Puntland) and is involved in relief aid, rehabilitation and development programs in various sectors: Education, Health, Rural Development, Agriculture and Governance (Peace, Human Rights and Gender Development).

Current & Previous Projects implemented by KAALO NGO
Milestones:
Implemented the largest program that Civil Society Organization implemented in Puntland. Distributed nearly 60 tones of books, journals, hospital beds, other hospital equipments, wheelchairs, crutches etc. to Somali communities across Somalia in 2001. Counterpart International in Washington USA contributed the shipment.
Carried out the first public building evacuation program since the collapse of the last Central government in 1993-94 in Nugal region of Somalia.
Established the first Skills/Professional Training Institute (Garowe School of Management) in Puntland in 1999. Renamed Puntland Community College (PCC) in 2001 and
was named Puntland State University (PSU) in 2004.
Implemented the first Puntland Administration Funded community project (Drought Relief Program) during the current drought (2003-04) in Puntland.
Short Courses we have conducted
Garowe School of Management (GSM)
60 students enrolled GSM for a six-month course (only 17 had completed the planned six month course- March to September 1999).
39 students admitted for one-year course – March 1999 to March 2000
GSM teachers participated in a training course in Nairobi, Kenya – June to July 2000
Short courses conducted in GSM from August to
April 2000.
A Six month computer training course, 20 trainees for each month (120 persons for six months), for government employees sponsored by UNDP.

One month computer training course for 10 KAALO staff members funded by CARE International.

Three month course for 20 Punltand police and army forces in administration and accounts sponsored by DIAKONIA

Puntland Community College (PCC)
In May 2001, a two-year course program started
at the college
90 students (45 male + 45 female) selected for admission
Preparatory courses of Basic English and Commercial Arithmetic were initiated.
A Six-month evening courses in accounting, management, IT and English for sixty students was conducted; the students themselves had sponsored these courses.

One-month course for 6 Punltand DRDD (Directorate of Reintegration, Demining and Demobilization) employees in accounting and management conducted and sponsored by UNOPS.
In
October 2001, construction of PCC college compound commenced and completed in July 2001.
In
August 2002, a new PCC building opened and inauguration ceremony held.

One-month in-service training course for 18 employees from government Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation Agency in computer skills and advanced English sponsored by UNDP.
From
August 2001untill August 2003 PCC two-year course program completed. (34 girls and 31 boys)
In
September 16 and November 2003, a three months preparatory course of English and Mathematics began.
An UNDP paid Consultant was hired
In
December 2003, three-months course for PMAC (Punltand Mine Action Center) employee in higher computer skills and advanced English sponsored by the UNDP.
In
November 2005, (currently) 8 months On-line Distance learning program on Financial Planners and Management training sponsored by UNDP and World Bank.
We are launching an ODL certificate of Journalism course in partnership with the Indiana University of Pennsylvania (USA). Admission is in progress with learning starting in March 2006.
PETT (Promotion of employment through training) in collaboration with Diakonia has also contracted PSU to provide capacity building services to Punltand youth in Garowe.
PSU Academic program
The institution is currently offering a degree program in Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BBA) with the first batch set to graduate in the coming semester.
A four-year degree program in BBA has been launched with two groups in their fourth and first semester respectively.
Other four-year Bachelor of Science degree program in Information Technology and Public Administration are to be offered to the current probationary fresh intake (Semester zero).
The first batch of the ODL VSAT based program students in financial
planning and management have already been enrolled and are now completing their Pre-ODL Course program.
Other ODL –Certificate in Journalism and English Proficiency and IT Master is on going.
