Kaalo is a Somali local Ngo based in Garowe Puntland Somalia and involved both Relief and development; and implemented tens of development projects in Puntland, particularly
in the Education sector since 1992.
Currently Kaalo is handling educational projects both formal and non formal from literacy and numeracy, adult education,
vocational skill education, Primary, Diploma up to Puntland state University. Funded by
Somalia Diaspora, International Community, Kaalo and local community.
Kaalo and Hivos Netherlands jointly funded and implemented six months courses for vulnerable Women groups, Minorities and marginalized HH who
could not afforded to pay the course fees during the learning period. The women
who earned the opportunity were 16 women. 12 of them were funded by
the Hivos Nederland and for 4 of them their fees were paid by Kaalo
NGO.
PSU female Lecturer teaching office management skills
Activities performed:
- Kaalo invited suitable female High School graduates to six months Vocational Training Course on Office Management, Simple Book-keeping and accountancy, English and computer application at Puntland state University within criteria of selection.
- The applicants were more than 27 women who entered
the exam. The above sixteen women were registered by Kaalo and PSU academic sector.
- Kaalo and PSU than hired the required lecturers to this short term course.
- On March 1st 2007, the first batch of the March- Oct. female students on academic scholarship
were admitted. A six month’s Vocational Training on Office Management, Simple Book-keeping &Accountancy, English and computer applications was started.

- Kaalo made a lobby and advocacy for finding jobs after they accomplished their courses, this resulted that the Mayor and some of the local and international Organizations mentioned their commitments of providing jobs to these women students. Also Business companies were
interested
- The midterm examines have been done and only two of them were failed.
Objectives of these Courses:
- To provide and offer the vulnerable marginalized and minority groups short term courses of office skills and knowledge.
And an opportunity of creating of earning jobs by introducing vocational trainings and skills etc.
Outputs:
- Vulnerable and marginalized women’s earned vocational Office skills training course.
- Commitments of job opportunities in place.
- Good score of Mid term exams reflected
- Advocacy and lobby of the vulnerable women will be continued.
Recommendations:
- A large number of the above mentioned groups are seeking to get an opportunity like this; and both the community and
the local authority are recommending the expansion and continuation of
these short term courses and found various areas to promote and develop female education courses.
- There are also a large number of female who are illiterate and need the offer
for literacy and vocational skill training.
